Spice!

We all like a little spice in our life sometimes. Well, I found the best way to add that little bit of that needed spice. Its just enough, but not to much. Be careful though, too much will cause lots of regret later down the road. What is this bit of spice you ask.

Its Spice Cake! (What did you thinking it was:)

Will and I made a great spice cake. It was so good, and just what we needed! Thank goodness that Hubby likes spice cake too. If not I could have gained another 5 lb in the next day or so. Will is an icing kid more than a cake kid. So, he eats the icing off and leaves the cake.

This is a few pictures of Will helping me. He helped mix the cake, spread the icing, and according to him, we NEEDED sprinkles. He helped add those too!

I started babysitting a few days a week and this was Will's Day. He wanted to make a cake. So, when we had a day with just me and him we made this wonderful cake. It is soooo good, you don't even know! We had a lot of fun making it too!

Quotable Sunday-frugality

Frugality is the word of my life. It was born in to me. I may not be the best, but by golly I am good! Here are a few quotes I really like!

One dollar for eternal happiness? I'd be happier with the dollar. ~Monty Burns

The amount of money you have has got nothing to do with what you earn.. people earning a million dollars a year can have no money and.. People earning $35,000 a year can be quite well off. It's not what you earn, it's what you spend. ~Paul Clitheroe

A bargain ain't a bargain unless it's something you need. ~Sidney Carroll, A Big Hand for the Little Lady

Frugality may be termed the daughter of Prudence, the sister of Temperance, and the parent of Liberty. ~Samuel Johnson

He who does not economize will have to agonize. ~Confucius

And my personal favorite is.....

Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship. ~Benjamin Franklin

Thankful Thursdays-The little Things Part 2

On this Thankful Thursday I am thankful for more of the little things we take for granted.

Did you ever just think about what you would do without some of these things.

1. The washing machine. I have seen those wash boards. They don't look to fun!

2. The gas stations. I don't like to pay for the high gas, but don't know how I would get gas without one. I don't think I could ride a horse to town, put Will's car seat on it, and get the groceries home without braking the eggs and mashing the bread!

3. Clothing stores. I could make my own cloths if I had to. I know how to sew and can use a sewing machine, but not everyone can.

4. Dr. Pepper! This is my weakness. I like to drink water, but it gets old fast.

5. Sunscreen. With white skin and red hair, I sooooo need this.

What are you thankful for today? Let me know!! We can all find something to be thankful for!

Pink!

Well I made another baby blanket! This one is crotchet in a shell pattern. It's not perfect, but what in life is? This blanket is pink for a new little girl named Kenzy! She was born at 4lb 7oz.

So tiny for such a sweet girl. I hope this blanket will keep her warm!

DIGIORNO Party!

I finally got to have my DIGIORNO House Party!!! It was so great! They sent me a box in the mail shaped like a pizza delivery box and inside was all the party stuff. I got a pizza cutter, a football shaped oven mitt, 6 coupons for free DIGIORNO pizzas, 15 coupons for $4.00 off DIGIORNO pizzas, and a ton of beads. (I didn't count the beads.)

On Sunday was the big game to see who would go to the super bowl. We had our Saints gear on and had the pizza in the oven.

What a game!!!! It was a nail biting, edge of your seat, referee hating, GO..GO..GO...screaming game! .........And the SAINTS WON!!!! Our SAINTS are going to the SUPER BOWL!!!!

By the end of the game the high fives where flying and the men where crying. This is a Saints fallowing since birth kind of family! Even Will had his Drew Brees jersey on hollering GO DREW BREES!! Every few minutes.

We had such a great night. With the pizza hot and delicious to the great game win! WOW! Here are a few pictures I took of Hubby cooking the great pizzas and the kids making Play-Dough pizza! So cute!!

So because of our party I am doing two great quotes about parties. Why two? Because they are the best two! Enjoy your Sunday everyone!

At every party there are two kinds of people - those who want to go home and those who don't. The trouble is, they are usually married to each other. ~Ann Landers

I am thankful for the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends. ~Nancie J. Carmody

The Craziest Thing!

I have to tell you all about the craziest thing ever. I checked the mail yesterday and found that Hubby got an envelope with just a return address and no name. When we opened it it had a $5.00 gift card in it from Academy! No note or anything else was in it. We didn't even know who it was from.

So, I did some research on the address. It was the Academy in Katy, TX. We live in Louisiana. We never go to Katy, TX. I was stumped. I even called that Academy and they didn't know what to tell me.

Finally late last night laying in bed it dawn on me. I signed us up for the Academy Birthday Club. Hubby had a birthday in December. That had to be it.

So, if you want your $5.00 gift card for your birthday (or about a month after) you can sign up here. All you do is subscribe to their emails and you will get a gift card in the mail for your birthday.

You can go here to sign up. I would like to thank Freebies for Mom for this tip!

Thankful Thursdays-PADS!

Welcome to Thankful Thursdays! I have been doing Thankful Thursdays with Sherry at A Saving Sherry for some time now.

I have found that Sherry is no longer doing her Thankful Thursdays. So, with that Thankful Thursdays is now brought to you by Me! If you would like to join in, just go on and do your post and mention my blog.

Today and every month (for it seams like forever) I am thankful for Pads, Tampons, and Liners! I can only imagine the world for women before they where available. I love to read books that are based in different time periods, and many times I have come across the slight mention of a women's monthly and have been grateful all over again.

So today I salute the person who invented Pads, Tampons, and Liners! I also want to say a big thank you to Always and Kotex (to name a few) for making these great products that much better!!!!!

So, what are you thankful for today? Let me guess...is it Midol and Pamprin?:)

Not As Much Fun as I Thought!

I found a great thing for me and Will to do kind of as an arts and craft project with the bonus of getting to eat it. It is something I have ALWAYS wanted to do and never got to. For Christmas this year it just wasn't in the budget. But now that all the Christmas stuff is on sale so was this. This is what it was (and still is).

A Gingerbread House!

I found this and thought GREAT! This will be so much fun and Will is going to love it!.....

It is not going so well, and is not that much fun yet! We started on this last night. I didn't know it took one hour to set after you put the walls up, then took three to four hours to set after the roof was on. Picture a 3 year old so excited he is jumping out of his skin to start and then has to sit and wait:( So not fun!!! Finally I told him we would finish tomorrow with the fun part (decorations). But, I caved and we decorated it as soon as I thought it wouldn't fall down under our creative hands. LOL!

Yes, I know what you are all thinking, It will most likely be stale. I just don't care. I always wanted to do a gingerbread house and never got to. So we are singing jingle bells and doing one now. Don't let your Christmas Spirit go just because December 25th has passed. Remember to celebrate Jesus every day!!!

My lesson learned. Don't start one in the evening! Here are a few pictures of what it looks like from start to finish.

It is beautiful if I do say so my self. And I do! It looks like two 3 year olds did it and not one 3 year old and one 28 year old:)

By the way, I only paid $2.99 for it. It was worth that at least.

That "New" Smell

I told all about my cell phone taking a good bath in the washing machine last week, and my little big foot shoe search yesterday. Well, today we have both new phones and shoes.

I searched the mall, the used cell phone shoppes, eBay, Walmart, and finally the AT&T store. I think I made the best deal on the phone I picked out. I ended up getting it for FREE "with a 2 year contract". I don't mined signing a new contract. AT&T is the best cell phone company in our area.

As you can guess, Hubby's phone decided to stay charged for only a few hours a day after it met my new fancy red phone. So, Hubby got a new phone too. We picked the same phone. Its a Samsung Flight.

I say fancy, but it's not really. Its fancy for me! I am a "simple as you can get it" cell phone girl. I only need to call out, get calls, and a camera (for all those great pictures of my little man). This phone has lots more. I guess I will just have to get use to technology getting smarter than me:)

Will got new shoes too! He LOVES his CARS shoes and would take no other. I had to find him a new pair that had CARS too! I finally found one in his size. The only thing is that they don't light up. He was ok with that. He realized he had to choose between light up shoes and CARS shoes. Of course the CARS on them was way more important in his eyes. The best part was they only cost $16.00. I found them at Walmart. They had some so cute girl CARS shoes too!

I don't know how people do it with more than one kid. This one costs a ton. I don't think I could do it with more. I know I would find a way, but I can just imagine the money spent on clothes, shoes, and food on three or four kids. WOW! I pray for you all! Kids are not cheep! Especially when they just have to have shoes with their favorite character, but grow out of them in 2 months, and will only wear those shoes unless you find another pair like them.

January 18, 2010

Big Foot!

I have found Big Foot! I think he has taken over my son. How else could this be explained?

About 2 months ago I got Will new clothes. Shoes where included. Well, he started walking a little funny the last few days. He kept saying his leg hurt. When I asked if it was his leg or his foot he would then say his foot. Finally, after many times of taking off his shoe to make sure no army men, rocks, or other things where in them, I sucked it up and admitted that he has already outgrown his shoes.

My I remind you that these shoe are the light up Lightning McQueen shoes he just had to have and cried over when they didn't have his size. So, I frantically searched until I found them! NOW I HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER PAIR!!!!! This is getting so frustrating.

Today I will be spending my day looking for his new shoes. Please wish me luck in finding a pair that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg! I need both arms and legs to keep up with him:) He is in a size 10. I have a feeling I will be getting a size 12 for a 3 year old. My gosh!!!! That makes him sound so big!!!!!!!!!

Thankful Thursday~The Little Things

Today on Thankful Thursdays I thought I would do a post on the little things that are sometimes taken for granted. So, I am thankful for.......

Warm cozy blankets on cold winter days.

Cool Cotton Underwear. (For when you get to warm under those cozy blankets:)

Soft baby skin that you notice looks so much better than yours!

Lotion for your skin, so that it can look better and not be so itchy.

A refrigerator or "ice box" as we call it. Have you ever imagined life without it? We lived out of an ice chest for a few days once:(

Fluffy white clouds in the sky. They are soothing to look at and remind me that God is still caring for us!

Twinkly Stars. They remind me that it is night time and I can now go to bed and start a new day tomorrow, no matter what happened today!

....and so much more I may just make this part 1 for this week! I hope you all have a blessed day!

Frugal Tip Time!

I am not the frugal queen, nor is this the best frugal blog, but I do try. Frugality is in my blood. Not many of you have ever met my father, but those of you who have, you know I was born to be frugal. I have had a few people ask about how I can save so much money. So, this is my first frugal tip. (Not sure how many I will have. I may just send you to one of the many more frugal queens out there.)

Today's Frugal Tip Is:

Buy your fruits and veggies NOW! Buy and Freeze! Get all you need soon. With all those unseasonably cold days in Florida and other southern states, the fruits and veggies price will shoot up very very soon! Buy your oranges, strawberries, grapes, fresh beans, and so on. I found oranges for 25 cents a few days ago! I think I will buy more next time I go to the store. I saw the green onions, carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli on sale at my local grocery store. I will be stocking up on what I need. I hope you do to!

Struggles and Failures in the Cold!

As you all know I have been struggling with the cold winter months of this year. I thought I was prepared. I thought I could just stay in my nice warm house, under a nice warm blanket, on my nice warm couch.

Well, I didn't get to do those things. I was out in the cold most of the time this weekend! Friday morning Hubby informed me he was freezing his legs off at work. We got him a nice warm jacket but nothing for his legs. So Saturday morning (after we got all the ice off the truck) we took a trip to Walmart about 25 miles away. We got him something for under his pants and then met with his Mom and Step Dad for lunch at Pizza Hut. (They have that awesomely great deal with any size pizza and any crust and toppings for just $10.00.)

We made it home and Hubby tried on his new pants. They were way too big. So off to town to a local store that had some in a cheaper name brand. We got home with them, and saw that we had way too much water under our house that wasn't there before.

A pipe under our house busted (Our house is off the ground because of flooding here). This was not good!!! Hubby found the problem and searched for the stuff he needed to fix it. On Saturday everything closes around noon here, and we didn't want to make another trip to Walmart or a lumber yard.

He found a few parts and started putting it all back together only to realize that the pipe was splintered a good ways under the house and he couldn't fix it with what he had. On top of that he was socking wet and cold. (My ears rang with all the bad words he used at this moment!)

We did a lot of looking and calling around for a cap to just cap it off. Finally we decided we needed to go to the lumber yard a get one. (By this time it was 5:40 pm and the lumber yard closed 6:00 pm. We would never make it!) Hubby's Step Dad saved the day by going for us, since he lived closer and I just picked it up from him. Now by the time I got back with the parts and we went outside again to fix it it was around 7:30 or so.

Sunday morning I didn't go to church because of all the ice. I was a little bummed about that. Then Hubby tried on his new pants we had just got him and they riped from the wast band. Plus they were way to small. (Sight!) We would have to make another trip to Walmart anyways.

So since Will only has one set of long underwear, I raced to wash them with some of my clothes to make a full load. As they were well on their way of being dried is when I realized a horrible event had taken place.....I washed my cell phone in with the clothes!!!!! I hadn't taken it out of my pocket after coming in from fixing the pipe the night before.

If anyone know where I can get a cheep cell phone let me know. I will not pass up a good used one either.

All in all we our weekend was long, cold, and not that great! On top of it all we spend almost every last dime we had on all these problems. Even the money I had tried to set aside for later:( I really hope everyone Else's weekend was better than mine! I had a few more problems, but why add them here to this already really long post you already stoped reading.

Quotable Sunday-Cold

Today's quotes have to do with cold. You can all guess why! I am cold!!!! My feet may never warm up again. I may even loose a few toes. (No, not really. I feels like it though!) I could never live in places that stay cold for at least half the year much less most of the year. My hat's off to you brave people who do! (But really, why do you live there?)

So on with the quotes!!!

Love keeps the cold out better than a cloak
Anonymous

The colder the x-ray table the more of your body is required on it

It was an ideal day for football - too cold for the spectators and too cold for the players Red Smith

Hot heads and cold hearts never solved anything

Burrrrrr...and Miracle baby

Today is a very very cold day here in Louisiana. We aren't use to all this cold weather. Yes it gets cold here, but its a wet cold. The humidity is always high making the cold even colder, but to be below freezing for a few days in a row, with the humidity. Burrrr!

I am in my house with my little boy, warm and snug. Today will be a day filled with cartoons, blankets on the couch, and crocheting for me. I only wish Hubby wasn't freezing his but off at work! I feel bad for him. Tomorrow we will go get him something to keep his legs warm. We thought we were prepared, but that's the one thing we didn't think of.

I hope our electricity stays on, since we have an all electric house. The news said they would be prepared too. At the moment my feet are big blocks of ice. I never can get my feet warm. Hubby said my blood just doesn't flow too well. I don't know. I have always been that way.

Well, I am off to watch Max and Ruby! I hope everyone else is as warm and comfy as us!

Oh on a side note: My friend that I am making a baby blanket for had her baby yesterday. She was 4 lb 7 oz. They say she is so small she fits in a shoe box:) Their miracle baby is healthy and beautiful.

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful today for my home. No it's not the nicest one on the road, nor is it the one people pass by and say "I wish that was my home." I love it thought because it is mine and so many people don't have a home. Some rent all their lives, some live with family, and some are even homeless.

This house was built about 40 years ago and then was added on to about 15 years ago. I got it in 2003 and it will be totally paid for in 2013. I am so close I can taste it! Since it became my home I have done a little remodeling, but really only what was needed. Will's room has the biggest makeover and the kitchen got some much needed TLC, but still really could use more. The living room also got some TLC, but we really need to do away with the "false" fire place. What was the point of that? REALLY!

So yesterday I did my own winter proofing to my home. I'm no Mrs. Fix It that's for sure, but I do what I can. Last year I tackled the doors. I put weather stripping in them where needed. Yesterday I rolled up my sleeves and got my caulk gun ready. Two windows in my house badly needed this. It worked, even if it didn't look all that great. Who'll go looking anyway?

I also wanted to put that foam stuff around a pipe we have outside, but couldn't find any so I wrapped it with an old set of jeans hubby can't wear anymore due to overuse and failure of the material. Duck Tape works wonders too. By the weekend we will have temperatures in the teens. I had to do something.

Before...

After...

Now why exactly is that pipe so tall? You got me. I got the house as is. This has just not been in our priorities to cut it lower and put a real handle on it. We just use a pair of pliers to turn it on and off. Yes we are a bit white trash when it comes to fixing thing up. We have no choice....money is tight. After 2013 a lot will change. The house will be paid for and we will put more money into it. But for now......

Strings and Sunsets

It is amazing what an imaginative 3 year old can come up with. I had some leftover yarn from the last blanket I did, and Will wanted it.

He loves tow trucks, which he calls "hooker trucks". He decided to make his remote control truck pull his John Deer tractor. He needed the string to make his remote control truck into a hooker truck.

After lots of tries, and lots of tangling he finally asked for help. Hubby tied the string so it wouldn't come off and away he went. He loved it. I didn't think that the little truck would pull the tractor, but it did. He then wanted to go outside with it to pull it in the driveway. Hubby has a remote control Jeep, so they played together for a while.

Here is the sunset at the end of the day. It was just a perfect ending to the fun we had just had.

(By the way the string had to be eventually cut off the truck and tractor. He got it back in the house and tangled it so bad cutting it was the only way to get it off! Boys!)

The Newest Blanket

As most of you know I love to crochet. I consider myself still a beginner, but I am learning fast. I like to try different patterns and even just make my own with new stitches I learned.

For Christmas my Hubby wanted me to crochet a blanket for his Dad. He wanted me to make it camouflage and big. Really big. It took me two months and it ended up taller than me. I am 5 foot 2 inches. This blanket was at least 5 feet 9 inches. (I didn't really measure it. I am just guesstimating.) It was huge. Not only was it long, but it was wide too. I could have used it as a queen size blanket on the bed. Hubby's Dad is a big man though, so it worked out perfect for him.

The new thing I did with this blanket is, while I crocheted I prayed. I said at least one prayer for each row. Let me tell you that was a lot of praying. I did most rows with around 4 different prayers.

I thought I would be relieved when it was done, but I miss it. I really do. So yesterday I went out and got more yarn and am now working on a baby blanket for a friend who will go in to have her baby girl Thursday. I plan to keep up with praying per row. Most of my praying will be for this miracle baby. You see, my friend had to be put in the hospital a few months ago because her water broke early. After she was in the hospital and hooked up to all kinds of machines the doctors left. When they came back later to check on her, her body healed itself and the fluid filled right back up. That is truly a miracle. The doctors are still baffled, but we know that prayer does a lot. She has truly been blessed and I will continue to pray for a healthy little girl to be born into the world soon.

Dear Tree....

Here is a letter to my Dear Christmas Tree.

My Dear Christmas Tree,

I miss you already. It has only been an hour since your twinkly lights and green branches graced my living room. You protected our gifts so well. You have all my Christmas joy wrapped with you in your plastic box. I can't wait to bring you out next year. (sigh) A year seems so far away. I enjoyed putting you up this Christmas more than last. You had decorations dripping from every branch now that Will is taller and allowed us to help decorate you. You help my family memories one each beautiful branch. As I took off each ornament, I was reminded of where each one came from and why it meant so much to me. Will still sings Christmas songs and tells me he missed you too. It was a sad occasion for us all the day you came down. We will wait with heavy hearts until we see you again next year.

With all our Love,

The Spears Family

I Screwed Up Quotables Sunday!

Ok, so I got Quotable Sunday and Thankful Thursday mixed up. It has been some crazy days with Christmas and New Years and a lot less sleep. Plus we are all sick with allergies and sinuses. So I did my quotes on Thursday with a Thankful Thursday caption..... and for all of you who missed it, here they are again! Enjoy a second time this week for all of you who have already read them on Thursday! By the way I am thankful for the new year and all that it promises.

Today's quotes have to do with new beginnings. As we are taking down one calender and hanging a new one I am sure we are all thinking about new beginnings. Here are a few quotes I found about this subject that I like. Enjoy!

"You will never reach your goal until you start to take action, any action." Byron Pulsifer

"The secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endings." Dave Weinbaum

"One step must start each journey." Author Unknown

"There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning." Louis L'Amour

Did You Get Any Great Deals?

I would like to talk about all the great deals out there. Every store I went to or passed by had things on sale. Did you get any good deals out of the end of the year sales? I didn't, but I really didn't need anything I saw on sale. I wasn't the lucky one to find the great Hoover Floor Mate on sale:( That's what I wanted. My second hand one broke right before Christmas.

I did see a lot of those Christmas gifts some got, on sale for more than half off. I am so glad nothing I gave for Christmas was on sale later. That would have made me hot. Knowing I paid way to much for something that obviously was not worth what I paid! It makes me wonder why they would mark it up so much knowing they would have to show their hand after Christmas was over. I think if I paid 75% more than what an item was worth before Christmas, that I would think twice about shopping there again.

Moving on I want to know about those great deals everyone (besides me) scored!!!! What did you get supper cheap? Ooh...Was it that Kathy bag? Or was it that great pair of shoes you have been dieing for? Let me know so that I can be happy for someone! I didn't get anything:( My Hoover Flore Mate is still in the stores:(

Resolutions....

First off...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Now ...resolutions are one of those nasty words that I don't use very often. I don't like resolutions because I feel like I would be setting myself up for failure. Why make a resolution at the end of one year for the beginning of another. Isn't that bringing bad thoughts over into a so far clean new year?

When I find I need to change things in my life, I decide to change them then and there. Why wait? What's the point? If I feel the need to loose weight, which I do, I do something about it as soon as possible. I have not really yet, but that is because as much as I would like to be smaller, I don't want to give up those great foods I love. When I am really really ready I will do it then! Not on January 1, 2010. That day will be the day I cook a great roast with homemade bread and whatever else I decide to make with it that day. I will not cook all that great food then not eat it!

I have made changes in my life through out 2009. Most have been successful. Some, I am still working on. Do you make resolutions at the end of the year? How well do you usually reach those goals you set for yourself? Let me know. I really would like to know if making resolutions for a new year works for others!
